Joan Baez is an American folk singer, songwriter, musician, and activist born on January 9, 1941, in Staten Island, New York City. She grew up in California in a family of Mexican and Scottish descent. Her father was an immigrant physicist and her mother was a Scottish-American language professor. Baez's music career began in the early 1960s and she quickly became known for her beautiful voice and powerful political activism. She was highly influential in the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement, and her music often contained messages of peace, justice, and freedom. Today, Baez is considered one of the greatest folk singers of all time.
